Traverse County, located on the western edge of Minnesota, is the least populous county in the state, with a population of 3,360 as per the 2020 census. Its county seat is Wheaton, and the county was founded in 1862 and organized in 1881.

Traverse County shares its western border with the eastern borders of North and South Dakota, and the Red River flows northward along its western line. The Mustinka River flows southwestward through the upper portion of the county and discharges into Lake Traverse. The county's terrain is characterized by low rolling hills that are mainly devoted to agriculture, except in developed areas. The land slopes towards the west and north, with the highest point located at the southeastern corner of the county, at 1,119 feet (341m) ASL.

The county spans over an area of 586 square miles (1,520 km2), with 574 square miles (1,490 km2) being land and 12 square miles (31 km2) (2.0%) being water. The county's landscape offers breathtaking views of the rolling hills and extensive fields that stretch as far as the eye can see.
